Choachí enters the Global Biological Corridor

Choachí enters the World Biological Corridor and is declared one of its global kilometer zeros.

What does this mean?

Text By: Jorge Extramiana Salillas | December 19, 2023 (Las 2 orillas)

The Global Biological Corridor is an international project, present in the 5 continents, which seeks to generate a continuous area as an ecological belt around our planet, made up of green and blue infrastructure, linking countries, people, fauna, flora, jungles, forests, reserves, oceans and marine habitats.

Choachí was invited to participate in the world tour of the project after reviewing the different natural areas and confirming the policies and actions that have been carried out for the benefit of its natural habitat and biodiversity, where the local population seeks to coexist with all this natural treasure, thanking its mayor Carlos Alberdi Velásquez Garzón and the coordination of Tourism of Choachí for facilitating our work.

As Jorge Extramiana Salillas, president of the International Committee of the World Biological Corridor, explains, we plan to unite the American Continent from Chile to Canada, linking natural land and marine areas, where Puerto Williams in Cape Horn is already part of the project and its world kilometer zero of South America, we encourage other municipalities and countries to be interested in the project that is for the benefit of future generations of humans, fauna and flora.

Choachí declared world kilometer zero of the corridor in Colombiabecoming one of the most important points worldwide.

The declaration of World Kilometer Zero in Colombia has been made possible thanks to the personalities and institutions that work and collaborate in the Global Biological Corridor such as primatologist Dr. Birute Galdikas and Joaquín Araujo, Eudald Carbonell Birute Galdikas and Joaquín Araujo, Eudald Carbonell, José María Bermúdez de Castro or the oceanographer Sylvia Earle; Max Bello, champion of the COP25 and COP26 oceans, Odile Rodríguez de la Fuente, daughter of the famous ecologist Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente and universities, such as the IUSA (University Institute of Animal Health and Food Safety) of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the University Institute CIBIO (Ibero-American Center for Biodiversity) of the University of Alicante, (BIOECOMAC) Biodiversity, Marine Ecology and Conservation of the University of La Laguna Tenerife, TaCoBi (Taxonomy and Conservation of Biodiversity) Consolidated Research Group of the University of León, Eduardo Galante Professor of Zoology, Spanish Association of Entomology, the Biodiversity and Conservation Research Group (BIOCON) of the University Institute for Research in Sustainable Aquaculture and Marine Ecosystems (IU-ECOAQUA) of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and international institutions such as the Great Ape Project, Fernando González Sitges zoologist, International Orangutan Foundation, Philippe Cousteau Foundation, European Bison Reserve of San Cebrián de Muda (international office of the World Biological Corridor), the NGO A Forest for Planet Earth, Novia Salcedo Foundation (ECOSOC), biosphere reserves, such as the Biosphere Reserve of El Hierro (international office of the corridor for the oceans), the Museum of Natural Sciences of Barcelona, other international museums or former diplomats from various countries; UNESCO Etxea - UNESCO Center of the Basque Country, the international photographers of marine habitats, Francis Perez and Felipe Ravina, Mercedes Reyes marine biologist of Tenerife cetacean heritage, Tonina Association, Antonio Pizarro president of the Spanish society for the defense of geological heritage.
